Chapter 23 - The Cold Hand in the Crib

The mansion had become a maze of lethal traps.
Daniel raced through the subterranean corridor, his boots pounding against the stone floor, Hannah right behind him. The smoke from the burning conservatory was beginning to seep through the ventilation shafts, carrying the acrid stench of ash and burning petroleum.
They emerged through a concealed door into the mansion’s grand foyer. The scene was surreal. Crystal chandeliers flickered erratically as the backup emergency generator struggled to maintain power. Rain lashed against the towering arched windows, casting dancing, monstrous shadows across the marble floors.
"The clocktower staircase is at the end of the west gallery," Daniel said, his voice taut with suppressed panic. "Hannah, stay down here and call Detective Vance. Tell him to bring a tactical unit immediately!"
"I'm not leaving you, Daniel!" Hannah insisted, grabbing his arm. "Evelyn spent years in a maximum-security ward. She knows how to manipulate, how to ambush! You can't go up there alone!"
"Clara has less than eight minutes of oxygen!" Daniel roared, his composure finally breaking. "I lost Eleanor to madness, Hannah! I am not losing my little girl!"
He wrenched himself free and sprinted toward the ornate spiral staircase leading to the clocktower. Every shadow seemed to move. Every creak of the ancient timber floorboards sounded like footsteps.
As he reached the landing of the third floor, near the nursery, a strange noise stopped him dead in his tracks.
*Crying.*
Soft, muffled sobs coming from inside Clara's old nursery room.
Daniel stopped, his breath catching in his throat. His tactical instincts screamed that it was a trap, but a father’s heart operates on instinct beyond reason. He drew the heavy iron trowel from his belt and pushed the painted white door open with the toe of his shoe.
The nursery was bathed in an eerie, pale blue nightlight.
In the center of the room, Clara’s antique wooden crib was rocking back and forth with a slow, hypnotic rhythm. *Creeeak. Creeeak.*
"Clara?" Daniel whispered, stepping into the room, his eyes scanning every dark corner, behind the rocking chair, beneath the window drapes.
Inside the crib, wrapped tightly in a pale pink blanket, was the shape of a small child.
Daniel took three rapid steps forward and reached out, his hand trembling as he pulled back the blanket.
His breath hitched. It wasn't Clara.
It was Clara’s oversized porcelain doll, its painted face mutilated with black spray paint, a miniature digital audio recorder duct-taped to its chest, playing the looping sound of Clara’s terrified sobs.
And strapped around the doll's neck was a ticking digital countdown display: *00:03:45.*
Beneath the timer, wires led down into a small, military-grade block of C4 explosive hidden beneath the nursery mattress.
"Daniel, behind you!" Hannah’s frantic scream echoed from the doorway.

Daniel turned instantly, but he was a fraction of a second too late. A heavy iron fire poker slammed brutally into his ribs, driving the wind completely from his lungs and sending him crashing against the wooden railing of the crib.
