Chapter 12 - The Billion-Dollar Will from Beyond the Grave

The room dissolved into absolute silence, save for the rhythmic, dripping condensation from the room’s air-conditioning vent.

Julian surged to his feet, the aluminum chair clattering violently against the concrete floor behind him. “What did you just say, Marcus? My mother tried to drown Elena! She pushed her off the swim deck! She stood at the ladder with a gaff hook trying to smash her skull open! I saw it! I pulled the hook from her hands!”

Marcus Vance didn’t flinch. He didn't even adjust his silk tie. He casually opened the titanium briefcase, retrieved an iPad encased in brushed aluminum, and turned the screen toward Julian and Elena.

“The Coast Guard recovered the yacht’s black box and bridge audio, Julian,” Marcus said with the cold detachment of a surgeon delivering a terminal diagnosis. “Or rather, they recovered what was left of it. But Mrs. Montgomery had an independent satellite uplink installed on the *Sovereign* two weeks ago. High-definition cloud backup, routed directly to our private servers in Zurich.”

Marcus tapped the screen.

The video loaded instantly. The timestamp in the corner read: *02:14 AM*—the exact moment Elena had been treading water in the pitch-black ocean, screaming for her life beneath the hull.

The camera angle was from the high-mounted security dome overlooking the aft deck. But the lighting was strangely distorted, the frame stuttering with digital artifacts. In the video, a woman dressed in Victoria’s signature white linen pantsuit was stumbling backward near the brass swim ladder. Another figure—slender, soaked in dark water, hair plastered across her face—came lunging out of the shadows with a heavy metal fire extinguisher.

The soaked figure struck the woman in the linen suit across the shoulders, sending her tumbling over the railing and into the black surf below.

The soaked figure then turned toward the camera for a split second.

Elena felt the air leave her lungs in a sickening rush. The face on the video was her own. Her wedding dress, her braided hair, her wide, panicked eyes. But the sequence of events was entirely inverted. The video showed *Elena* attacking Victoria and throwing her overboard.

“This… this is impossible,” Elena choked out, her hands flying to her mouth. “This is a deepfake! Julian, tell him! You were there! You found me hanging onto the rudder! You brought me up!”

Julian was staring at the screen, his pupils dilated with horror. “Marcus, this is an edited composite. You know what my mother is capable of! She controlled the entire electrical grid of that boat!”

“A composite?” Marcus murmured. He pulled a thick sheaf of legal documents from the briefcase and slapped them onto the metal table. The sound cracked like a gunshot. “The forensics team at Mandiant already validated the cryptographic signature on the file. It is untampered. But that is merely the beginning of your problems, Julian.”

Marcus leaned across the table, his eyes boring into Julian’s with lethal intensity.

“At midnight, while you two were supposedly fighting for survival, Victoria Montgomery executed the *Crux Clause* of the family trust.”

Julian’s breath hitched. “The Crux Clause was dissolved when my father died.”

“It was re-ratified three months ago, Julian. When you announced your engagement to an elementary school teacher with zero pedigree and forty thousand dollars in student debt,” Marcus sneered, his eyes flicking to Elena with undisguised contempt. “Under the terms of the Crux Clause, if Victoria Montgomery dies under suspicious or violent circumstances, the entirety of the Montgomery Fortune—thirty-two billion dollars in equity, real estate, and defense contracting assets—does not pass to you.”

“Then who does it go to?” Elena demanded, her voice shaking with rage and terror.

Marcus smiled, a terrifying, razor-sharp grin that sent ice through Elena’s veins.

“It passes in full to you, Elena.”

Elena blinked, stunned into total paralysis. “What?”

“Every single cent,” Marcus whispered. “The penthouses, the private islands, the offshore holding companies. Everything goes to Elena Montgomery. With one single, ironclad condition.”

Marcus slid a single page across the table. In the center of the page, written in Victoria Montgomery’s elegant, sweeping calligraphy, was a single handwritten paragraph:

*‘To the woman who clawed her way out of the gutter into my son’s bed: I leave you everything I own. But you will only collect it if Julian Montgomery is convicted of my murder. If he walks free, the entire estate is liquidated and donated to the St. Jude Maritime Foundation, leaving both of you penniless fugitives.’*

“She didn't just try to kill you, Elena,” Marcus said softly, packing his briefcase. “She engineered a game where you either send the man you love to the electric chair… or you both die in a gutter. Welcome to the Montgomery family.”
