Chapter 92 - Blood Over the Reactor Core

Elena twisted her torso with violent speed, shielding Maya with her left shoulder. The ceramic blade slashed clean through the thick fabric of Elena’s tactical jacket, slicing deep into the meat of her upper arm. Agony flared white-hot through her shoulder, but adrenaline swallowed the pain whole.

Elena roared—a guttural, primal sound stripped of all fear—and drove her forehead straight into the bridge of Lucian’s nose. Cartilage shattered like dry twigs. Blood splattered across her face, hot and metallic.

Lucian recoiled with a scream, clutching his mangled face. Elena didn't give him a second breath. She gripped the collar of his ruined jacket, kicked his good leg out from beneath him, and smashed him face-first into the diamond-plate steel of the catwalk. The detonator skittered across the wet mesh, stopping barely an inch from the edge of the drop.

Maya was shrieking, her tiny face flushed scarlet. Elena dropped to her knees, scooping the detonator up with trembling, blood-soaked fingers. The digital timer read 02:14. It was hardwired to the hangar’s structural support charges—twelve shape-charges designed to collapse the entire volcanic dome and bury the submarine pen under four million tons of Pacific basalt.

"Elena..." Lucian wheezed, his fingers clawing at her boot as he dragged his broken body along the floor. "You can't... disarm it. Only the matriarch's master key... only Eleanor's cipher can abort the sequence..."

Elena froze. Eleanor. Her monstrous mother-in-law, the woman who had pushed her off the yacht on her wedding night, the architect of this entire multi-billion-dollar bloodbath.

*"ALERT: VESSEL ASCENT COMMENCING,"* the PA system announced. The colossal submarine began its vertical buoyancy climb, rising out of the flooded dry dock like an obsidian island. Its immense wake sloshed violently against the structural pylons holding the catwalk.

Suddenly, a gunshot echoed through the cavern.

A high-velocity round punched through Lucian’s shoulder blade. He jerked violently, coughing dark crimson onto the grate, his eyes rolling back as his chin struck the steel.

Elena spun around, holding Maya tight, her heart leaping into her throat.

At the far end of the gantry stood a silhouette veiled in the drifting white steam of the venting coolant pipes. The figure lowered an assault rifle, walking forward with calm, measured, terrifying grace. High-heeled combat boots clicked sharply against the metal.

Eleanor Montgomery emerged from the mist.

Her silver hair was pulled back into a severe, immaculate twist, completely unbothered by the chaos. She wore a tailored Kevlar vest over a cashmere turtleneck, her face cold, calculating, and carved from marble. In her left hand, she carried a titanium briefcase; in her right, a silenced SIG Sauer.

"You always were remarkably resilient, Elena," Eleanor said, her cultured, aristocratic voice carrying clearly over the roar of the ocean waters. "I suppose that’s why my sons couldn't resist you. A fatal flaw in their breeding."

"Eleanor," Elena whispered, her teeth bared, standing up and placing herself between the matriarch and the dying Lucian. "Stop the countdown. Or you die here with the rest of your monstrous family."

"Die?" Eleanor tilted her head, a venomous smirk curling her lips. "My dear girl, I designed this fortress forty years before you crawled out of whatever gutter you were born in. Do you truly think I came all this way without the exit codes?"
