Chapter 91 - The Dead Brother’s Detonator

The catwalk groaned beneath the shudder of tectonic machinery as the oceanic launch doors parted above them. Thousands of tons of subterranean black saltwater cascaded in violent, foamy curtains into the colossal hangar bay below. Through the misty spray, the leviathan submarine stirred like a titan awakened from a century of frozen sleep, its nuclear reactors emitting a low, marrow-rattling hum.
Elena clutched baby Maya against her chest, her knuckles turning bone-white through her torn tactical gloves. She could feel the rapid, frantic flutter of her daughter’s heartbeat against her ribs—a fragile pulse directly contrasted with the terrifying doomsday weapon rising beneath their boots. Every surface of the catwalk was slick with salt spray and hydraulic oil.
"Put the detonator down, Lucian!" Elena yelled over the thunderous roar of the intake valves. The wind whipped her soaked hair across her eyes, stinging with the bitter taste of brine and cordite. "You kill us, you kill the dynasty. You kill everything you bled to steal!"
Lucian Montgomery stood thirty feet away on the vibrating steel grate, his silhouette framed by flashing red strobe lights. His pristine bespoke suit was shredded, soaked in oil and crimson stains. Half of his face was bruised purple, his left eye swollen shut, but the right one burned with the feverish glint of absolute lunacy. In his hand, the black casing of the manual override detonator blinked with a steady amber LED.
"The dynasty?" Lucian laughed, a harsh, jagged sound torn away by the cavernous draft. "There is no dynasty without control, Elena! Look down there! Look at what Father built while we were playing obedient little heirs! This isn't just an offshore inheritance. It’s a clean slate. An extinction-level fail-safe. If I can't hold the rudder, no one breathes the air on the surface!"
*"PRIMARY THRUSTERS ONLINE,"* the automated feminine voice boomed through the subterranean dome, echoing off dripping rock walls. *"SURFACE TRAJECTORY LOCKED: T-MINUS SIX MINUTES."*
Maya screamed louder, terrified by the klaxons. Elena rocked the baby with one arm while her other hand slid toward her waistband. Her holster was empty. The Beretta was somewhere on the floor three decks down, lost when the security blast doors had severed the catwalk behind them. She had only her knife, her bare hands, and the instinct of a mother cornered by a rabid dog.
"Arthur gave his life so she could live," Elena said, stepping forward, testing the slick grating. "You’re his blood, Lucian. You share the same DNA that just unlocked that ship. Look at her. Look at your brother’s child."
"Arthur was weak!" Lucian snarled, taking an aggressive step toward her, the detonator raised high. "He thought love was a currency. He died in the dark because he thought you were worth saving! And now you bring this... this screaming parasite to take what was promised to me from the day I was born?"
Below them, a deafening blast of compressed steam erupted from the ballast vents. The catwalk swayed violently. Elena saw her opening.
When the walkway tilted thirty degrees under the kinetic shockwave, Lucian stumbled, his boots losing purchase on the hydraulic fluid. For a split second, his thumb slipped off the safety shroud of the switch.
Elena didn't hesitate. She lunged across the slick steel, using the sway of the gantry to accelerate her momentum. She didn't dive for his throat; she dove low, striking Lucian’s shattered knee with the heel of her combat boot.
A sickening snap cracked above the hum of the turbines. Lucian roared in agony, collapsing against the handrail. But as he fell, his hand locked onto the detonator casing, his thumb jamming down on the red trigger.

A shrill, unbroken tone pierced Elena's eardrums as the detonator locked into its arming sequence. A countdown screen illuminated: 00:03:00.
"If I drown," Lucian choked out through a mouth full of blood, lunging forward with a concealed ceramic shiv aimed straight at Maya’s bundle, "we all sleep at the bottom of the trench!"
