Chapter 70 - The Cradle at Ground Zero

The Great Hall of the Cape Elizabeth Citadel was an amphitheater of glass, steel, and ruthless ambition.

Perched on the jagged black granite cliffs of Maine, three hundred feet above the violently churning Atlantic, the hall looked out through forty-foot floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows into the raging storm. Lightning illuminated the towering waves crashing against the rocks below, casting monstrous shadows across the polished marble floor.

In the center of the hall, resting on an elevated platform of black obsidian, sat the glass incubator.

Alistair Montgomery stood beside it, his hands resting on his gold-headed cane, watching the heavy double doors of the elevator slide open.

Elena stepped out into the light.

She was drenched in blood and soot, her eyes burning with an unholy, lethal clarity. In her right hand, she held the combat shotgun. Beside her walked Julian, his weapon raised, and behind them, dragged by her hair in Elena’s left grip, was Victoria Montgomery.

"Let her go, Alistair," Elena said, her voice cutting through the rumble of thunder shaking the glass walls.

Alistair did not flinch. He didn't even look at Victoria, who was whimpering on the floor at Elena’s feet.

"You made it further than I anticipated, Elena," Alistair said calmly. "Remarkable. You truly are an exceptional specimen."

"I am a mother," Elena said, stepping toward the dais, her weapon locked onto his forehead. "Step away from the cradle, or I will paint this glass with your brains."

"You won't shoot," Alistair said smoothly, lifting his cane. "Because this cane contains the primary atmospheric pressure sensor for the incubator. If my heart stops, or if the cane falls from my hand, the seals on that glass pod release a concentrated dose of potassium cyanide. She will be dead before my body hits the marble."

Elena froze, her boots skidding against the slick stone.

Inside the incubator, the baby was awake. She wasn't crying. Her pale blue eyes were fixed on Elena, her tiny hands pressing against the clear acrylic shield.

"What do you want, Alistair?" Julian screamed, his gun shaking in his hands. "The money is gone! The fleet is disarmed! It’s over!"

"The money is irrelevant, Julian," Alistair said, a terrifying, fanatical smile spreading across his pale face. "The fleet was merely a distraction. Do you really think I built this empire for paper currency?"

Alistair reached toward the master console on the obsidian pedestal and pressed his palm against the glass scanner.

A low, mechanical vibration surged through the bedrock beneath their feet.

Outside, far out in the black, boiling waters of the Atlantic trench, a colossal shape began to rise from the deep. Giant navigation towers, dripping with seaweed and black foam, broke through the surface of the sea.

A nuclear-class submarine, stripped of all naval markings and bearing the monolithic crest of the Montgomery Sovereign, surfaced beneath the flashing lighthouse beam.

"The real trust isn't a bank account, Elena," Alistair whispered, his eyes gleaming with mad triumph. "It is the vessel out there. And it requires only one final verification to launch the deep-sea payload."

Alistair looked down at the infant.

"She isn't Julian’s child, Elena."

Elena’s heart stopped. The world around her seemed to lose all sound, collapsing into a suffocating, terrifying vacuum.

"What did you say?" Elena breathed.

Alistair’s smile widened into a hideous, jagged grin.

"Julian was sterile from the fever he caught in Morocco six years ago. Victoria knew. But she kept it quiet to protect the family pride."

Alistair stepped closer to the glass cradle, his eyes fixed entirely on Elena's horror-stricken face.

"The genetic material used to fertilize your egg during that private clinic procedure in Boston... wasn't Julian's. It was mine. She is not my granddaughter, Elena. She is my daughter. And she belongs to the sea."

Beneath the incubator, a red digital display flashed to life:

**PATRIARCH BIOMETRIC CONFIRMED.**

**PRIMARY LAUNCH SEQUENCE: COMMENCING IN 00:00:10... 09... 08...**

Julian lowered his gun, his mind breaking, staring at his father in absolute, paralyzed horror.

May you like

Victoria let out a shrill, hysterical shriek from the floor.

And on the obsidian pedestal, Alistair’s finger hovered over the final release switch, while Elena raised the shotgun directly into the eye of the man who had authored every breath of her living hell.
