Chapter 27 - The Midnight Hunt on the Private Island

Elena stood frozen at the doorway of the bunker, the cold draft of the cellar raising the fine hairs on the back of her neck.

"Charlotte," Elena whispered, piecing the puzzle together with sickening clarity. "The fourth candidate."

"Candidate 03, actually," Charlotte smiled, stepping into the harsh white light of the monitors. She was stunning, with the same patrician cheekbones and ruthless, predatory eyes as Victoria, but without the physical ruin. Her hands were scarred with calluses from heavy weaponry. "Mother sent me to the Black Sea five years ago to run the maritime blockade runners. Julian thought I was dead. Christian thought I was dead. But Mother knew neither of her sons had the stomach to command the fleet."

Charlotte walked toward a wet bar in the corner, pouring two fingers of single-malt Scotch with absolute indifference to the chaos happening upstairs.

"When Mother called me from the safehouse in Lisbon two weeks ago," Charlotte continued, "she told me you had survived the fall. She said you broke her jaw, shot her son, and took the titanium drive." Charlotte turned, raising her glass in a mock toast. "I have to admit, sister-in-law... I was impressed."

"If Victoria is in Lisbon, why are you here?" Elena asked, her hand slipping slowly toward the concealed pocket inside the folds of her gown.

"Because Mother’s rule is over," Charlotte said, her voice dropping into a register of chilling brutality. "She got old. She got sentimental. Putting you through an obstacle course? Testing your resilience? It’s theatrical nonsense. This empire doesn't need an heir who survived a trauma, Elena. It needs an operator who knows how to liquidate assets."

Charlotte reached under the desk and flipped a heavy industrial toggle switch.

Instantly, the manor above them groaned. Heavy hydraulic shutters slammed down over every window and doorway in the mansion, locking the five hundred gala guests—and Julian—inside a steel-reinforced tomb.

The overhead lights in the bunker flickered and died, replaced by the eerie red glow of emergency battery power.

"The manor is in lockdown," Charlotte said, her silhouette illuminated against the red glow. "In twenty minutes, the ventilation system will flood the upper floors with halon fire-suppression gas. The senators, the bankers, my pathetic brother... they’ll all asphyxiate in their tuxedos. The press will call it a tragic industrial heating failure."

Charlotte picked up the Beretta from the desk, racking the slide with a clean, metallic *clack*.

"The will stipulates that if Julian and the unborn heir are deceased, and Victoria is legally dead, the entire estate consolidates to the nearest surviving blood relative. Me." Charlotte smiled, pointing the barrel straight at Elena’s stomach. "Give me the titanium drive, Elena. And I’ll make sure the bullet is quick."

Elena didn't reach for her pocket.

She lunged forward, grabbing the heavy crystal decanter from the wet bar, and smashed it across the exposed electrical wiring of the surveillance console.

A blinding shower of blue sparks erupted, accompanied by the violent pop of high-voltage capacitors blowing out. Total darkness swallowed the bunker.

Gunfire ripped through the pitch black—three deafening muzzle flashes illuminating Charlotte’s snarling face—as Elena dropped to the floor and rolled behind the server racks.
