Chapter 53 - The Matriarch's Voice on the Radio

Above the grease-slick trench, the first burst of suppressed 9mm fire punched through the deck plate three inches from Elena’s left knee. The rounds ricocheted off the bilge walls with shrill, terrifying whines, splashing brackish, oil-slicked seawater into her face.

The baby didn't flinch. Instead, she reached a tiny hand toward the hot, spent casing that rolled into the water beside them.

Elena didn't wait to be turned into swiss cheese. She thrust the barrel of her seized pistol up through the grated ventilation slat directly beneath the lead contractor’s heel and pulled the trigger three times.

The 9mm hollow points tore through the bottom of the man’s combat boot, shattering his ankle and driving him down to the grating with a choked scream. Before his body fully hit the deck, Elena shoved the iron hatch open, lunged upward, and pressed the pistol against his temple, firing once more to silence him.

"Contact!" the second mercenary shouted, swinging his submachine gun around the massive diesel block.

Elena rolled behind the heavy steel frame of the generator, dragging the dead contractor’s body with her to use as a ballistic shield. Bullets chewed into the corpse's tactical vest with sickening wet thumps. She reached into the dead man’s harness, her fingers wrapping around the pin of an incendiary thermite grenade.

"Thomas!" Elena screamed over the roar of the engines, her voice raw, echoing through the iron bowels of the ship. "You want the asset? Come down here and bleed for her!"

"You're a schoolteacher from Rhode Island, Elena," Thomas’s mocking voice drifted from the upper catwalk. "You survived my mother's yacht by luck. You survived the reef because Christian was weak. But you are out of ocean, little bride."

Suddenly, the cutter’s internal public address system crackled to life.

The sound that followed sent an icy chill deeper into Elena’s soul than the freezing saltwater ever had. It wasn't the screech of feedback. It was the soft, rhythmic clink of fine silver against porcelain, followed by the dry, elegant laugh of a woman who owned the world.

*“Thomas, darling, don’t play with the help,”* the voice purred through the ship’s tannoy speakers.

Victoria Montgomery.

Elena looked up at the rusted speakers mounted in the engine room ceiling, her breath catching in her throat. Victoria was dead—Elena had watched the grand salon of the *Leviathan* collapse into an inferno. She had watched the helicopter rotor blades shred the glass tower on Widow’s Reef!

*“You look surprised, Elena,”* Victoria’s voice floated through the intercom, crystalline, untouched by smoke or flame, broadcasting from a satellite link thousands of miles away—or perhaps from the very bridge of this ship. *“Did you truly think a woman who controls thirty percent of global liquid gas shipping travels without a decoy? The creature you fought on the reef was an expensive biological mimic, my dear. A dying twin sister I kept on ice for precisely such an unseemly public scandal.”*

Elena’s knuckles turned white on the grenade pin. "You're a monster, Victoria!"

*“I am an institution, child,”* the Matriarch countered, her tone dripping with venomous amusement. *“And you have performed your role admirably. You carried my bloodline through the trial of fire. You weeded out Julian, who was too sentimental to lead. You eliminated Christian, who was too greedy to obey. And now, you bring my true grandson home to me. Bring her to the bridge, Thomas. If she resists, take her eyes and leave the rest for the gulls.”*

The speakers clicked dead.

Above her, Thomas leaned over the catwalk railing, his rifle leveled directly at the gap between Elena and the baby. "You heard Mother," he said softly. "The curtain falls, Elena."

Elena pulled the pin on the thermite grenade.

"Tell your mother," Elena snarled, her voice dropping to a death whisper, "that the wedding is canceled."

She threw the grenade not at Thomas, but directly into the open, pressurized fuel line feeding the port diesel engine.
