Chapter 24 - The Will That Named My Daughter

The silence stretched so taut that the dripping of condensation from the warehouse ceiling sounded like hammer blows on an anvil.
Julian’s hand hovered over the grip of his pistol. His eyes darted between Elena’s serene, bloodied face and the glowing screen of the laptop. The mercenaries behind him shifted nervously, their professional instincts warning them that the man paying their day rate was losing his grip on reality.
"Step aside, boys," a voice suddenly cut through the warehouse from the second-story catwalk.
Before Julian could pivot, a hail of 5.56mm rounds chewed through the floorboards at his feet. The mercenaries scrambled, returning fire toward the shadows above as concrete chipped and sparks sprayed in violent arcs across the rust-eaten machinery.
Elena didn't hesitate. She grabbed the laptop, yanked the drive, and rolled behind a heavy cast-iron diesel generator just as a burst of automatic fire shredded the wooden table she had been sitting at.
From the overhead darkness, a figure dropped down the catwalk ladder with fluid, military grace. It was Vance—Victoria’s former head of yacht security, the man who had supposedly disappeared after the yacht fire. But Vance wasn't shooting at Elena. He was systematically executing Julian’s contractors with double-taps to the chest.
Within four seconds, three of Julian’s men were dead on the concrete. The fourth took a bullet through the knee and collapsed, screaming.
Julian scrambled behind a stack of rusted steel shipping containers, panting, his bespoke coat torn to shreds by concrete shrapnel. "Vance! You traitorous bastard! She’s dead! Mother is dead!"
"I don't work for your mother, Julian," Vance’s gravelly voice echoed through the smoke. He stepped into the light, wearing a heavy Kevlar vest, a tactical shotgun held at low ready. "I never did. I work for the Estate’s Executive Trustee."
Vance stepped up to the generator where Elena knelt, her revolver aimed at his chest.
Vance didn't raise his shotgun. Instead, he pulled a manila folder from inside his vest and tossed it at Elena’s feet.
"You need to read the addendum, Mrs. Montgomery," Vance said, his voice flat, completely indifferent to the wounded mercenary groaning ten feet away. "The will wasn't finalized thirty-six hours ago. It was executed the second Victoria hit the water."
Elena kept her gun leveled at Vance’s throat as she opened the folder with one hand.
Inside was a medical laboratory report from Boston General Hospital, dated three weeks prior—taken during what Elena had believed to be a routine pre-wedding physical examination arranged by Victoria’s personal physician.
Under the section marked *Endocrine & Reproductive Pathology*, a single line had been highlighted in yellow ink:
*Patient: Elena Vance-Montgomery.*
*Result: Positive. Gestational age: 4 weeks. Fetal DNA match: Julian Montgomery II.*
Elena felt the world drop out beneath her feet. Her hand shook so violently that the paper rattled in the cold air.
*Pregnant.*
She was carrying Julian’s child. The grandchild of the woman who had tried to drown her, shoot her, and mold her into an assassin.
"The Montgomery Trust doesn't default to you, Elena," Vance said quietly, glancing toward the shadows where Julian was hiding. "It defaults to the unborn heir. And according to Massachusetts maritime probate law, until the child is born, the sole legal custodian of both the child and the trust... is the mother."
From behind the shipping containers, Julian’s ragged breathing abruptly stopped.
"You..." Julian’s voice emerged from the darkness, shrill, broken, and dangerously unhinged. "You’re pregnant?"
Elena looked down at her flat stomach, her mind racing through the weeks of poison, hypothermia, adrenaline, and violence she had survived. The child inside her wasn't a blessing; it was the ultimate pawn in Victoria’s fifty-billion-dollar game of generational slaughter.

"Julian," Elena said, her voice dropping into a tone of ice-cold authority she hadn't known she possessed. "You are now legally penniless. Put your gun on the ground, or I’ll have Vance paint the walls with you."
