Chapter 5 - The Hunter and the Hunted

Elena scrambled backward through the narrow ventilation shaft as fast as her bruised limbs could carry her. Dust and lint coated her skin, but she couldn't feel it; pure survival instinct propelled her through the dark. She had to get back to the cabin before Victoria unlocked that door, or escape into the crew quarters to find Julian.

*Julian doesn’t know,* Elena realized with sickening clarity. *His grandfather’s will had a loophole. Victoria isn’t just an evil mother-in-law; she’s an embezzler facing total bankruptcy if Julian’s marriage remains valid!*

As she reached the opening above her stateroom, she heard the heavy metallic thud of the cabin door being unlocked below.

Elena froze inside the shaft, peering down through the vent.

Victoria stepped into the master bedroom. She wasn't carrying a boat hook this time. In her gloved hands, she held a large, pre-filled glass syringe, accompanied by Dr. Harrison, who hovered nervously in the doorway like a vulture.

Victoria glided toward the bed, a predatory smirk playing on her lips. “Time for your final rest, darling,” she whispered, reaching out to peel back the heavy duvet.

Victoria ripped the covers down.

The bed was empty.

Two pillows had been stuffed under the sheets to mimic the shape of a sleeping human body.

Victoria’s face twisted into an expression of raw, unadulterated fury. The mask of aristocratic poise shattered, revealing the rabid beast beneath. “Where is she?!” she shrieked, whirling on Dr. Harrison. “You said she was paralyzed!”

“I… I injected her myself, Mrs. Montgomery!” the doctor stammered, backing toward the hallway. “She couldn’t have walked through the door!”

“Check the bathroom! Check the balconies!” Victoria barked, throwing the glass syringe against the wall, where it shattered, spraying lethal clear liquid across the carpet. “Lock down the lower decks! Find her! If she reaches Julian, we are finished!”

Elena didn't wait to see more. She pushed forward through a diverging ventilation branch that led toward the yacht’s lower engineering deck. If Victoria controlled the bridge and the doctor, the only person left who could stop this was Julian—and Julian was likely on the observation deck or in the lower engine control room checking the telemetry.

The duct angled sharply downward. Elena slid down the slick aluminum chute, landing with a muffled thud inside an auxiliary storage locker on Deck 2.

The yacht lurched violently beneath her feet. The engines groaned, their pitch shifting from a steady hum to an aggressive roar. Through a small porthole, Elena saw monstrous, black swells crashing against the hull. The sky had turned pitch black, illuminated only by jagged forks of violet lightning.

The ship was entering the outer band of a severe Atlantic squall—and Captain Miller was intentionally steering them straight into the storm’s epicenter to justify a total loss of communications.

Elena pushed open the locker door and stepped into the dimly lit corridor. The emergency lights were already flickering red.

Suddenly, a heavy hand clamped over her mouth from behind, dragging her violently into the shadows.
