Chapter 82 - The Boarding Party in the Black Abyss

The conning tower hatch blew inward with a concussive blast of compressed air and vaporized hydraulic fluid.
Elena pulled Maya tight against her chest, ducking behind the reinforced steel stanchion of the primary navigation console as shrapnel pinged violently against the bulkheads. Heavy, rubberized combat boots hit the iron floor plating with lethal precision.
Three operators descended in rapid succession, clad in matte-black, non-reflective deep-sea tactical armor. Their visors glowed with faint amber telemetry lights, scanning the smoke-choked bridge. They carried silenced subcompact rifles equipped with laser-target indicators. These were not the arrogant, spoiled private security guards Victoria hired; these were shadow-tier paramilitary killers trained for sub-surface wet-work.
"Target alpha is female, twenty-eight, armed," the point man said, his voice flat, modulated through a throat microphone. "Target beta is the infant. Biometric lock confirmed by Vance Command. The child must be taken alive and unharmed. The mother is expendable. Sweep and clear."
Elena held her breath, feeling Maya’s tiny fingers clutching the collar of her shirt. If Maya cried now, they were dead. Elena pressed her thumb gently against Maya’s cheek, praying with every shred of her soul for silence. Maya, as if sensing the butcher’s knife hovering over their heads, buried her face into Elena’s collarbone without a sound.
Elena clicked the safety off her weapon. She knew the layout of the *Sovereign*—she had memorized the emergency blueprints while Victoria was trying to drown her. Two meters to her right was the emergency ballast emergency blow-valve.
Elena didn't fire at the soldiers. She fired at the overhead high-pressure hydraulic line directly above the three operatives.
*RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!*
The burst of 9mm armor-piercing rounds shredded the red-banded high-pressure pipe. Instantly, super-heated hydraulic fluid at five thousand pounds per square inch erupted in a blinding, scalding torrent, turning the bridge into a screaming cauldron of steam and liquid fire.
The point man screamed as the boiling fluid melted straight through his tactical visor, blinding him. The other two scrambled, their formation shattered by the deafening hiss of escaping pressure.

Elena broke from cover, sprinting through the auxiliary corridor toward the lower decks. Behind her, heavy rifle fire shredded the metal bulkheads, bullets ricocheting around her ears like angry hornets. She plunged down the steel spiral staircase into the belly of the beast, her boots splashing through six inches of oily bilge water.
She had to get to the lower reactor bay—the only place on the vessel shielded by lead plating where their biometric sensors couldn't track Maya’s pulse.
