Chapter 2 - The Silent Harbor

The emergency dock at Cape Haven Hospital was shrouded in a thick, sulfurous marine fog. Blue and red strobe lights from three waiting ambulances fractured through the mist, casting jagged neon veins across the wet concrete.

The moment the rescue boat’s bumpers hit the rubber pilings, four paramedics in high-visibility gear swarmed the deck. Lily was lifted onto a gurney, a pediatric neck brace secured around her throat, an IV line already running saline into the back of her tiny hand.

"Pediatric submersion incident!" Owen shouted to the receiving trauma team as they sprinted toward the double doors of the emergency bay. "Hypothermia, possible pulmonary aspiration, oxygen saturation eighty-eight percent!"

Daniel tried to follow, but his knees buckled. The shock of the fifty-foot drop was finally catching up to his body. A sharp, blinding agony lanced through his right flank; three of his ribs were cracked, ground together with every breath he took. A young paramedic tried to catch him under the arm.

"Sir, you need a stretcher! You're bleeding through your shirt!"

Daniel shoved the paramedic's hand away with a ferocity that made the young man stumble back. "Get away from me. Take care of my daughter."

Daniel dragged himself through the sliding glass doors, his soaked leather shoes leaving bloody, seawater-drenched footprints across the pristine linoleum floor. The smell of hospital-grade antiseptic and bleach stung his nostrils, replacing the brine of the ocean.

Inside Trauma Room 3, doctors and nurses moved around Lily like a synchronized machine. Scissors sheared through her pink cotton dress, leaving the sodden fabric in a trash bin by the door. Daniel stood in the doorway, his hand braced against the cold metal jamb, watching the monitor screen flicker with erratic green spikes.

"Her heart rate is stabilizing," a female physician called out, adjusting the pressure on an automated ventilator. "Lungs have crackles in the lower right lobe, but no immediate sign of massive fluid buildup. We got her in time, Mr. Mercer. She's a fighter."

Daniel let out a breath he felt he had been holding since the terrace railing gave way. He sank into a plastic chair in the corner of the room, his head in his hands, trembling with a mixture of profound relief and suffocating fury.

His pocket vibrated.

He reached down, expecting his phone to be fried by the seawater, but remembered he was carrying Owen's satellite handset. The screen lit up with an unknown number.

He pressed it to his ear. "Mercer."

"Daniel."

The voice was female, shaky, whispering through what sounded like a howling wind. It was Zoe Park, the freelance photographer Daniel had hired to document the island gala.

"Zoe?" Daniel straightened up, ignoring the knife-twist of pain in his ribs. "Where are you?"

"I'm in my car. I left the island on the midnight ferry before Vanessa could lock down the marina," Zoe whispered frantically. Her breath came in ragged gasps. "Daniel... she's telling everyone you lost your mind."

"What?"

"Vanessa. She called an emergency gathering in the ballroom ten minutes after your boat left. She was crying hysterically. She told the guests... she told them you were suffering from acute PTSD from Claire's death. She said you had an episode, grabbed Lily, and jumped into the ocean in a fit of psychosis."

Daniel’s grip on the plastic phone tightened until the casing groaned. "She what?"

"She has them completely fooled, Daniel. Senator Sterling was there, Mayor Higgins was there... they were comforting her! She’s already brought in her private security detail from Aegis Global to 'secure the estate' and protect Lily from *you*."

"Zoe, where are you right now?"

"I'm five miles outside Cape Haven," Zoe said, her voice dropping lower. "Daniel... when I was taking photos of the fireworks from the gazebo... my telephoto lens was aimed at the south terrace. I didn't see it happen live, but my high-speed burst mode captured thirty-six frames between 10:14 PM and 10:15 PM."

Daniel rose slowly from the chair. "What is on that memory card, Zoe?"

There was a long, suffocating pause.

"Frame forty-two shows Vanessa's hands wrapped around Lily's ankles," Zoe whispered, her voice breaking. "Frame forty-four shows her leaning over the railing, smiling. And frame forty-six... shows Lily in mid-air."

Daniel closed his eyes. The world narrowed into a singular, burning point of absolute vengeance. "Do you have the card?"

"I took it out of the camera and hid it under my dashboard," Zoe said. "Daniel, there's a black Cadillac Escalade following me. It's been behind me since I got off the ferry terminal. No headlights. Just parking lamps."

Daniel's blood turned to ice. "Zoe, listen to me! Do not drive to your apartment. Head straight for the 4th Precinct in downtown Cape Haven! Do not stop for red lights!"

"Daniel, they're speeding up—"

A deafening metallic crunch shattered the connection, followed by the terrifying scream of twisting steel and breaking glass. Then, nothing but the hiss of dead static.
