Chapter 29 - Two Faces of the Same Ghost

Water began to cascade from the ruptured ventilation ducts above the bridge.
The structural integrity of the submarine was failing. The pressure hull was screaming, rivets shearing off and ricocheting like bullets across the chamber as the vessel sank past its maximum crush depth.
"Daniel, the manual release!" Claire screamed from inside the spherical escape pod. "The docking clamps won't disengage from the inside! Someone has to stay outside and pull the manual hydraulic purge!"
Daniel froze.
He looked at the escape hatch. Inside sat Lily, safe in the center harness, her little face pressed against the small glass window, crying for him. Beside her was Claire, her skin translucent, her life draining by the second, her hand resting on the emergency hatch seal.
And on the deck, bleeding and coughing, lay Evelyn Vance.
"You see, Daniel?" Evelyn hissed, laughing through a mouthful of blood as she pulled herself up against a shattered console. "One of us has to drown. The clone is dying anyway. Her organs will fail in less than an hour. If you stay to pull the lever, Lily grows up an orphan, watching her synthetic mother rot before they hit the surface!"
Daniel looked at Claire.
Claire was crying. She shook her head slowly, her eyes filled with an unbearable, beautiful love that no synthetic code could ever manufacture.
"Daniel..." Claire’s voice came over the pod’s external comms. "She's right about me. My sequence is over. I have minutes left. I always knew... from the day I took Lily and ran... that I was living on borrowed time."
"No, Claire," Daniel choked out, his eyes burning with unshed tears. "We leave together. All three of us."
"You have to be her father, Daniel," Claire whispered, her hand trembling against the glass. "You have to take her to the shore. You have to tell her... that her mother loved her enough to defy the gods who made her."
Claire leaned forward, kissing Lily’s forehead one last time. "Be brave, my sweet Lily. Daddy’s going to take you home."
Before Daniel could stop her, Claire hit the interior seal.
The heavy titanium hatch of the escape pod slammed shut, locking Daniel and Evelyn outside on the collapsing bridge, while Claire secured Lily into the high-impact immersion harness.
"Claire! NO!" Daniel roared, pounding his fists against the armored glass of the pod.
Through the glass, Claire looked at him with serene, heartbreaking peace. She pointed toward the manual hydraulic lever mounted on the bulkhead across the room—the lever that would blast the pod free of the doomed submarine before it imploded.
"Daniel..." Evelyn’s voice came from behind him, soft, venomous, and desperate.
Daniel turned.
Evelyn had managed to draw a backup ceramic blade from her boot. She lunged at him, aiming for his throat with the feral desperation of a cornered demon. "If I don't get that child, NO ONE GETS HER!"
Daniel caught her blade hand mid-air.
He didn't use technique. He didn't use finesse. He used all the primal, volcanic fury of a husband whose life had been torn to shreds, and a father whose child was being hunted by a ghost.
He shattered her wrist, ripped the knife from her hand, and drove the blade straight through the center of Evelyn Vance’s chest, pinning her to the command console.
Evelyn gasped, her blue eyes widening in shock. Blood bubbled from her lips. She stared at Daniel, her hand clawing feebly at his jacket.
"You... you destroy... everything..." she wheezed.
"No," Daniel whispered coldly into her dying ear. "I'm just taking out the trash."
He let go of the blade. Evelyn Vance slumped against the console, her cold eyes rolling back, her reign of terror extinguished in the dark.
The bridge groaned. A massive crack shot across the ballistic quartz viewport. Seawater began to spray through the seal in high-pressure jets capable of cutting through human bone.
Daniel sprinted across the tilted, shaking deck. He grabbed the heavy steel hydraulic release lever.
He looked through the pod's window one last time.
Claire was smiling at him, holding a trembling hand up against the glass. Beside her, Lily was screaming, her little hands pressed against the window: *"DADDY! DADDY, PULL THE LEVER! COME WITH US!"*
Daniel gripped the lever. He looked into his daughter’s eyes.
"I love you, Lily," he said, knowing the glass was too thick for her to hear. "Daddy will always find you."
He threw his entire body weight against the lever.
*CLANK-SHOOOOOM.*
The explosive bolts fired. The deep-submergence pod shot out of the submarine’s dorsal launch tube like a cannon shell, propelled by compressed air toward the distant, sunlit surface of the ocean.
A microsecond later, the quartz viewport of the bridge finally gave way.

Millions of tons of black, freezing Arctic water crushed the room in an instant, swallowing Daniel in total, absolute darkness.
