Chapter 43 - The Glitch in the God-Mind

The scientist approached the restraint chair with the clinical detachment of a butcher. He thumbed the ignition on the pneumatic bone drill; the tungsten-tipped needle whined to life, spinning at twelve thousand revolutions per minute.

"Breathe shallowly, Operative," the man muttered, positioning the needle directly over Daniel's sternum. "This procedure generates severe autonomic shock. Your heart will want to stop. Try to keep it beating for at least three minutes."

Daniel didn't look at the drill. He stared past the scientist, locking his eyes onto the little girl standing behind the reinforced glass.

Her posture was flawless, regal, commanding. But then, as the drill screamed louder and the needle pressed against Daniel's skin, something fractured.

A sudden, violent spasm rippled through Lily’s left shoulder.

Her left hand—the hand resting against the glass—abruptly flattened, her fingers clawing frantically against the surface. Her left eye flickered violently, the cold silver sheen glitching, fracturing into natural, frightened hazel-brown.

Daniel saw it. A single tear broke over her bottom eyelid and rolled down her chubby cheek.

Her lips trembled. For a fraction of a millisecond, the dual-tone frequency vanished from her vocal cords.

"...Daddy?"

The word was so faint, so terrified, it barely carried through the intercom. But to Daniel, it was louder than the roar of a thousand artillery cannons.

The real Lily was still inside. She wasn't erased. She was trapped beneath an iron prison of synthetic memories and hostile neural code, screaming for help from the dark.

"Lily!" Daniel roared.

The paternal fire that had carried him across three oceans exploded through his nervous system with the ferocity of a detonating sun. The telemetry monitors wired to his chest shrieked in warning as his heart rate spiked past one hundred and eighty beats per minute. Blood pressure surged into lethal territory, popping the micro-capillaries in his eyes until his sclera turned a terrifying crimson.

The scientist hesitated, alarmed by the biometrics. "His vascular pressure is too high—the marrow will hemolyze—"

Daniel didn't wait. He didn't care about torn ligaments or fractured bones. With a primal, animalistic shriek, he threw his entire upper body forward against the mechanical locks. The sheer mechanical force of his adrenaline-fueled spasm sheared the steel mounting pins holding his right arm.

The titanium clamp snapped. Shards of jagged metal tore open Daniel’s forearm, spraying dark red blood across the scientist’s sterile white face shield.

Before the man could scream or retreat, Daniel’s bloody right hand shot forward like a steel vise, clamping onto the spinning neck of the pneumatic drill. The diamond-tipped bit ground directly into Daniel's palm, tearing flesh and shredding muscle to the bone, but he didn't even flinch. He reversed the torque, ripped the drill from the scientist's grip, and drove the twelve-inch spinning bit directly upward through the underside of the man’s chin.

The drill punched through bone and brain stem in a sickening burst of gray matter and steam. The scientist went limp instantly, his eyes rolling back as his boots drummed a frantic death rattle against the deck.

Behind the glass, Lily’s face twisted in an agonizing civil war of identity. Her right side remained stone-cold, silver-eyed, and snarling with Claire's aristocratic fury, while her left side wept openly, her small mouth whimpering: *"Daddy... it hurts... it's so dark in here..."*
