Chapter 40 - The Child of the Abyss

The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the groaning of the dying warship as it began its final, catastrophic descent beneath the waves.

Daniel collapsed onto his side in the freezing water, coughing up blood and sea foam. His chest heaved in shallow, agonizing gasps. Behind his eyes, the emerald HUD was flashing erratically:

*CRITICAL SYSTEM FAILURE.*

*BIOMETRIC TETHER LOST.*

*NEURAL TERMINATION SEQUENCE: 02:45... 02:44...*

Prime had not been lying. His heart was gone, and the fail-safe was devouring 7’s consciousness from the inside out.

"Daddy!"

Lily splashed through the knee-deep water, throwing her arms around his neck, burying her face into his chest. "Daddy, wake up! We have to go! The water is coming!"

Daniel forced his eyes open, looking at her beautiful, terrified face.

"Lily..." he whispered, his voice fading to a rasp. "The escape pod... at the end of the hall. You have to climb in. You have to push the green button."

"Not without you!" she sobbed, pulling on his arm with all her tiny strength. "I'm not leaving you, Daddy! Please!"

"I can't, baby," he said, tears finally washing the blood from his eyes. "My time is up. But you... you're going to live. You're going to see the sun."

He forced his broken body to move one last time. He scooped her up, stumbled down the flooding corridor, and placed her inside the vessel's single remaining deep-sea escape sphere. He stepped inside, strapped her securely into the harness, and punched the emergency ejection sequence.

The titanium hatch hissed shut, locking them inside.

With a violent jolt of compressed air, the pod ejected from the hull of the sinking warship, shooting upward through the black depths toward the surface.

Daniel slumped against the bulkhead of the pod, his vision fading to gray. His fingers went numb.

*00:15... 00:14...*

"I did it, Claire," he whispered to the shadows. "I saved her."

He closed his eyes, ready for the darkness.

"You really think you saved me, Seven?"

The voice that spoke was not a child’s voice.

Daniel’s eyes snapped open.

Lily was still sitting in the harness before him, but she wasn't crying. Her face was completely still, completely relaxed, devoid of all fear.

And her eyes—her big, innocent brown eyes—were no longer brown.

They were glowing with an eerie, bioluminescent silver hue, identical to the master cipher of Project Black Horizon.

She looked at him with an ancient, terrifying intelligence, her voice harmonizing with Claire’s cadence through a vocal frequency that no three-year-old vocal cord could naturally produce.

"Claire didn't put the cipher in my blood to hide it from Daniel," the child said, tilting her head with chilling grace. "She put the cipher in me to *become* me. Extraction wasn't meant to steal the data. It was meant to wake me up."

The escape pod breached the surface of the Atlantic, rocking gently in the morning light.

Outside the thick viewport, the horizon wasn't empty.

Rising through the morning mist, twelve massive nuclear stealth submarines were surfacing in a circular formation around the tiny pod, their decks lined with hundreds of armed soldiers standing at rigid attention.

The child leaned forward, reached out with one small, cold hand, and gently patted Daniel’s dying cheek.

"Thank you for carrying me across the ocean, Operative 7," she whispered, as a hissing neuro-paralytic mist began venting into the pod from beneath her seat. "Your service to the Black Horizon is complete. Now sleep... while Mother takes the world."
