Chapter 45 - The Sonar of the Damned

"Explain before I pull this trigger," Daniel hissed, his finger trembling on the trigger, his arms holding the violently twitching child against his chest.

The soldier with the broken compass tattoo pushed his helmet back, revealing a rugged, scarred face covered in sweat and carbon residue. "My name is Commander Vance—Claire’s estranged brother, Julian. I helped build the Black Horizon twenty years ago before she lost her mind to the cipher. When she engineered you, Daniel, she thought she erased my access. She was wrong."

Heavy gunfire erupted further down the corridor. The screams of dying men echoed through the ventilation shafts, accompanied by the distinct thud of high-caliber explosive rounds.

"We don't have time for a family reunion!" Julian yelled over the din of battle. "Half the crew is loyal to Claire's synthetic neural net. They’re running the automated sequence from the conning tower. If the *Gorgon* ascends to periscope depth and establishes the satellite link, forty-two orbital tungsten rods will de-orbit over every capital city on Earth, creating an extinction-level reset. Claire wants to rule a graveyard."

Lily twisted violently in Daniel's grasp, her head snapping back, her eyes flaring bright, terrifying silver. "Julian... you pathetic, sentimental insect," she purred in Claire's flawless cadence. "You were always the weakest link in our bloodline. You think a mutiny can stop an algorithm that exists in the global cloud?"

"Shut her down, Daniel!" Julian shouted, tossing a small silver cylinder to Daniel. "That’s a localized neuro-EMP patch. Slap it against the base of her skull! It will fry the cybernetic receiver in her brainstem!"

Daniel caught the device. His hands shook. "Will it hurt her? Will it kill Lily?"

"If you don't use it, Lily is gone forever anyway!" Julian yelled as he fired a burst around the corner, cutting down two approaching exosuit shock-troopers. "The cipher is overwriting her natural memories every second! Once the synchronization reaches one hundred percent, the child’s brain tissue will calcify into pure bio-silicon! She will literally become Claire's terminal!"

Daniel looked down at the child. Lily’s face was contorted in sheer agony, veins glowing with faint silver light across her forehead and temples. She looked up at him, her hazel eye begging for mercy, her silver eye glaring with boundless hatred.

"Do it, Daddy..." the child whimpered in her true voice. "It burns... the bad lady is burning me..."

Daniel’s heart shattered into a million pieces. With a ragged sob, he slammed the magnetic patch onto the back of her neck.

An agonizing, high-pitched electrical screech tore through the corridor. A jolt of blue static surged across Lily’s scalp. The child stiffened, her spine arching violently, and let out an ear-piercing scream that resonated in both voices before her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed completely limp into Daniel’s chest.

The silver light faded. Her eyes closed. She was breathing, but her skin was freezing cold.

"Did it work?" Daniel breathed, his tears falling onto her pale face.

"It bought us twenty minutes," Julian shouted, reloading his weapon. "The patch only suppressed the signal. The main server core in the submarine’s keel is still broadcasting the reactivation pulse. To save your daughter’s life, Daniel, we have to sink this ship to the bottom of the Mariana Trench—and we have to do it from the inside."
