Chapter 20 - The Final Depths

"You always were a stubborn bastard, Daniel," Hayes sighed, his breath forming clouds in the rapidly cooling chamber as seawater began gushing through the compromised ceiling joints.

The water was already up to their knees, surging with terrifying momentum. Platform Tartarus groaned like a dying leviathan, its structural steel buckling under thousands of tons of oceanic pressure.

"They made it out, Tom," Daniel said, spitting blood onto the rising water, his eyes burning with cold defiance. "You lost. The ledger is in that pod with Claire. The moment she hits the surface, the Coast Guard automated distress network broadcasts everything to the federal judiciary."

Hayes’s face remained disturbingly calm. He didn't flinch. A slow, sinister smile spread across his lips.

"Did you really think the life pod was programmed to surface, Daniel?" Hayes murmured, tilting his head with chilling amusement.

Daniel’s blood turned to ice. "What did you say?"

"Claire designed the life pod system three years ago," Hayes said softly, lowering his pistol just an inch. "She programmed the emergency beacon to deploy automatically upon surfacing. But when I took control of Tartarus six months ago, I re-routed the navigation subroutines. That pod isn't rising to the surface, Daniel."

Hayes pointed toward the massive digital sonar display mounted on the command deck wall.

On the screen, a small green blip representing the life pod wasn't ascending toward the open air. It was descending deeper into the oceanic trench—straight into the subterranean docking bay of an unmarked, waiting nuclear submarine bearing the insignia of the syndicate's shadowy global leadership.

"Victoria didn't throw Lily into the sea to kill her," Hayes whispered, stepping back toward his personal escape hatch. "She was trying to deliver her to the true buyer. The woman Claire worked for all along."

Daniel’s breath caught in his throat as the monitors flickered, revealing the commander standing on the bridge of that black submarine.

A woman's face appeared on the encrypted feed—looking identical to Claire in every biological marker, but with cold, dead eyes and the voice of a phantom:

*"Thank you for securing my genetic clone and the child, Hayes. Commencing Tartarus final implosion."*

The ceiling of Platform Tartarus tore open. Millions of gallons of Atlantic sea crashed down in a catastrophic, roaring tsunami of black water, swallowing the chamber in total darkness as Daniel launched himself into the violent current with a desperate, dying roar...
