Chapter 46 - The Deep-Sea Guillotine

The *Gorgon* groaned under immense hydrostatic pressure as it plunged past two thousand meters. Emergency sirens wailed in rhythmic three-second pulses, bathing the flooded companionways in eerie amber strobes.

Daniel followed Julian and the surviving seven mutineers down the spiraling iron staircase toward the vessel's primary nuclear engineering bay. Every step sent a jolt of fire through Daniel’s wounded body, but he kept Lily strapped tightly against his chest with tactical harness webbing, her fragile head resting beneath his chin. Her pulse was weak, fluttering like a trapped moth against his collarbone.

"The conning tower has locked down the ballast controls," Julian yelled over the roar of rushing water. A pipe overhead ruptured, spewing scalding steam into the catwalk. "Claire's automated defense drones have seized the reactor room. They’re preparing to vent the coolant and use the submarine's thermal blast to launch the satellite communication buoy!"

"Where is the master killswitch?" Daniel demanded, racking the slide of a captured assault rifle.

"There isn't one," Julian said grimly, pausing at the heavy vault door leading into the reactor chamber. "Claire didn't believe in killswitches. She believed in biological sacrificial nodes. The only way to stop the broadcast is to physically sever the quantum optical cable inside the containment core."

"And that requires someone to go inside the flooded chamber," Daniel said flatly, reading the grim resignation in Julian's eyes.

"The water inside the core is irradiated and pressurized to five hundred atmospheres," Julian whispered. "Whoever enters will have forty seconds before the hydraulic seals crush their lungs and the radiation liquifies their DNA. It’s a one-way trip, Daniel."

Suddenly, the steel door before them buckled outward with a thunderous *BOOM*.

The titanium vault door was torn from its hinges by hydraulic claws. From the steam emerged four heavy automated combat synthetics—Project Black Horizon's ultimate enforcers. Standing seven feet tall, clad in blast-resistant ceramic armor and wielding dual rotary cannons, their optic sensors glowed with the identical silver hue that had possessed Lily.

*"Operative Seven detected,"* the machines droned in Claire Vance’s synthesized voice. *"Asset recovery secondary. Annihilation authorized."*

The cannons spun up with a terrifying whine.

"Take cover!" Julian screamed.

A storm of tungsten-jacketed rounds obliterated the catwalk. Julian’s mutineers were shredded in seconds, their bodies thrown across the bulkheads like ragdolls. Julian was hit twice in the abdomen, collapsing against the handrail in a spray of blood.

Daniel dove behind an armored bulkhead, his arms wrapped completely around Lily to absorb the concussive shocks. Concrete dust and metal slivers rained down upon them.

He was out of ammunition, surrounded by an invincible enemy, two miles beneath the surface of the ocean, with the fate of humanity and the soul of his little girl hanging by a thread.

And then, against his chest, the child opened her eyes.
