Chapter 55 - Shadows Over the Extraction Zone

The storm began to intensify as the stolen stealth cutter neared the coordinates of Archipelago X. The radar screen flickered erratically, blinded by an invisible electromagnetic jamming field that wrapped around the area like an impenetrable dome.
Suddenly, a high-pitched whine pierced the galley.
"Aaaah!" Lily screamed, bolting upright from the cot.
Daniel was by her side in an instant. "Lily! What's wrong? What hurts?"
The little girl was convulsing, her back arching off the mattress as brilliant silver light surged beneath her pale skin, illuminating the veins in her neck and face. Her eyes rolled back, glowing with an unearthly luminescence.
"Override initiated," Lily spoke, her voice completely distorted, layered with Claire’s synthetic tone. "Biometric sync at seventy-two percent. Tracking beacon active. Good morning, Operative Seven."
"Claire! Get out of her head!" Daniel roared, grabbing Lily’s shoulders, terrified that applying pressure would break her frail bones. "Leave my daughter alone!"
"She isn't your daughter, Daniel," the voice projected through Lily’s vocal cords, mocking and chilling. "She is the master key. And she is bringing you home."
A massive shock wave violently rocked the cutter.
Julian scrambled down the ladder, shouting, "Daniel! We’ve got incoming! Three fast-attack hovercrafts just breached the fog bank! They’re using sonic disrupters—it’s tearing the hull apart!"
Daniel scooped Lily into his arms, wrapping his jacket tightly around her trembling body. The silver light in her eyes began to dim as the transmission faded, leaving her unconscious and burning with a lethal fever.
"Take the helm, Julian!" Daniel barked, kicking open the cabin door and stepping out into the roaring gale. "Full throttle toward the cliffs! Crash us into the reef if you have to!"
"What are you going to do?" Julian yelled over the screeching wind.
"I’m going to buy us an entry point."
Daniel stepped onto the bow of the cutter. Through the sheets of blinding rain, three high-speed combat hovercrafts were closing in, mounted with heavy railguns that hummed with kinetic energy. The lead craft fired. A hyper-velocity slug tore through the water inches from their hull, throwing up a towering wall of white spray.
Daniel closed his eyes for a split second, surrendering to the silver fire roaring in his nervous system.
When he opened them, the world slowed to a crawl. The raindrops hung suspended in the air. The vibrational hum of the approaching engines registered as distinct acoustic waveforms in his mind.

He didn't run. He launched himself forward across the raging surf.
