Chapter 50 - The Leviathan’s Final Scream

"We have to get to the escape pods!" Julian shouted, struggling to his feet while clutching his bleeding abdomen. "The ballast tanks are breached! This sub is going to hit the crushing depth in less than four minutes!"

Daniel gathered Lily in his arms, ignoring the blinding agony tearing through every square inch of his body. Driven purely by fatherhood and adrenaline, he sprinted behind Julian through the tilted, sinking corridors toward the primary command module.

They reached the auxiliary escape bay. There was only one three-man titanium survival pod remaining on the launch rail; the rest had been jettisoned or destroyed during the mutiny.

Julian stumbled into the pod first, collapsing onto the pilot's bench and frantically hammering the pressurization controls. "Get in, Daniel! The locks are disengaging automatically!"

Daniel stepped into the pod and secured Lily into the central safety harness. He buckled the straps with trembling, burned fingers, checking the seals three times.

"Daddy, sit next to me," Lily pleaded, holding onto his sleeve. "Don't let go."

Daniel looked down at her with infinite love. Then, he looked at the biometric console on the pod's outer hatch.

The red display flashed an ominous warning: *TOTAL PAYLOAD EXCEEDED BY 85 KILOGRAMS. BALLISTIC THRUST INSUFFICIENT FOR SURFACE TRAJECTORY.*

Daniel’s heart stood still. The pod’s compressed air canisters had been damaged in the battle. It had enough thrust to propel Julian and a child to the surface—but with Daniel’s heavy, bio-dense engineered frame, the pod would fail to breach and sink directly into the abyss.

"Daniel, what are you doing?" Julian yelled from the pilot's seat. "Get in and seal the hatch!"

Daniel took a step back, out onto the flooding deck of the sinking submarine.

"Daniel, no!" Julian screamed, realizing what he was doing.

"Take care of my daughter, Julian," Daniel said softly, a calm, beautiful peace finally washing over his scarred face. "Teach her how to fish. Teach her how to be human."

"Daddy! No! Daddy, come in!" Lily shrieked, struggling against the harness, her tiny hands reaching out desperately through the hatch. "DADDY!"

"I love you, Lily," Daniel whispered.

He slammed his palm down onto the emergency manual ejection lever outside the pod.

The heavy titanium hatch hissed shut, sealing Lily's tear-streaked face behind the thick viewport. With a violent, concussive roar of pneumatic pressure, the pod detached from the rail and shot upward through the launch tube, rocketing toward the sunlit world above.

Daniel stood alone on the deck of the sinking leviathan. The water was already up to his waist, cold as death, rising rapidly. He leaned back against the bulkhead, closed his eyes, and listened to the creaking iron of the ship tearing itself apart in the black depths.

He had won. His daughter was free.

Then, through the pitch-black flooded water at Daniel’s feet, a rhythmic, mechanical sound began to echo.

*Beep. Beep. Beep.*

Daniel opened his eyes.

Floating in the dark water right before him was a detached tactical radio transmitter, still receiving an encrypted broadcast from an unknown deep-sea frequency.

A voice crackled through the static—clear, melodic, and chillingly alive.

*"Did you really think the cipher was only in the child, Operative Seven?"*

Daniel froze, the blood draining from his face. It was Claire's voice. Not a recording. Not a synthesized echo. A live, breathing transmission.

*"The child was the decoy, Daniel. You were always the master hard drive. Thank you for sinking the fleet... now, Project Black Horizon can begin without any witnesses."*

Beneath Daniel’s skin, beneath his burned flesh, his own veins suddenly began to ignite with a blinding, agonizing, uncontrollable silver light.
