Chapter 6 - The Hunt on Black Rock Island

Daniel didn't flinch. He didn't rise from the chair. He remained perfectly still, his body shielding Lily like an iron wall.
"Get out, Vanessa," Daniel said, his voice deadly quiet.
"I can't do that, darling," Vanessa purred, taking a step closer. Keller and another armed guard filed in behind her, blocking the doorway. "Judge Sterling is here with an emergency writ of protective custody. You’re having a breakdown, Daniel. You nearly drowned our daughter tonight. The press is downstairs. The police are waiting in the lobby."
Judge Sterling stepped into the room, adjusting his gold-rimmed spectacles. "Daniel, as a friend of your late father, I strongly advise you not to resist. Step away from the child. You will be remanded to the state psychiatric facility for a seventy-two-hour evaluation."
"And while I'm locked up," Daniel said, his eyes never leaving Vanessa's face, "who manages Claire’s trust fund? Who signs the authorization at eight o'clock this morning?"
Vanessa’s eyes flashed with a flicker of reptilian triumph. "As Lily’s legal guardian, I will act as sole trustee. To protect her future, Daniel. Just as Claire would have wanted."
Lily shrank back under the sheets, trembling. "Daddy... the bad lady. Don't let her touch me!"
"Hear that, Judge?" Daniel whispered. "That's a three-year-old child identifying her attempted murderer."
"She’s traumatized, Daniel," Vanessa sighed, dabbing a pristine lace handkerchief at her dry eyes. "You've poisoned her mind during your manic episode. Keller, please escort Mr. Mercer out. If he resists, use non-lethal force."
Keller stepped forward, reaching for Daniel’s shoulder with a gloved hand.
He never completed the motion.
Daniel moved with the explosive, lethal precision of a man who had spent eight years conducting maritime interdictions in hostile waters. He grabbed Keller's outstretched wrist, twisted it inward until the bone snapped with a sickening *crack*, and drove his elbow straight into Keller's throat.
The two-hundred-and-twenty-pound contractor collapsed to the floor, gasping for air.
Before the second guard could draw his sidearm, the bathroom door behind the bed flew open. Detective Hayes burst into the room, his service Glock drawn and leveled directly at Judge Sterling’s forehead.
"Drop the weapon! Police!" Hayes roared.
The second guard froze, his hand hovering over his holster.
"Hayes, you're out of your jurisdiction!" Judge Sterling shouted, his face turning pale. "I have a signed court order!"
"And I have a signed federal warrant for corporate espionage, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit treason," Hayes snarled, pulling a document from his coat. "Special Agent Marcus Vance from Naval Criminal Investigative Service just landed at Cape Haven Municipal Airport. Your offshore accounts at Siren Holdings were seized ten minutes ago, Sterling. You're going to prison for twenty-five years."
Vanessa’s mask of composure shattered. Her eyes darted toward the door, realizing the trap had closed around her.
"Keller! Move!" she screamed.
The injured guard swept Daniel’s legs from the floor. Daniel went down, his cracked ribs sending a blinding shockwave of white pain through his nervous system. Gunfire erupted in the confined hospital room as the second contractor fired two rounds into the ceiling, triggering the emergency fire sprinklers.
Water rained down from the ceiling tiles, turning the room into a chaotic deluge.
In the confusion, Vanessa lunged for the bed, her fingers clawing toward Lily.
"No!" Daniel roared. He lunged across the floor, ignoring the tearing agony in his chest, and tackled Vanessa around the waist. They crashed into the plastic medical cart, sending syringes, saline bags, and heart monitors crashing across the wet linoleum.
Vanessa shrieked, clawing at Daniel's face with her diamond-encrusted nails, opening bloody gashes across his cheek. "She's mine, Daniel! The Mercer money is mine! Claire was weak, and you are pathetic!"
Daniel pinned her wrists against the floor, his face inches from hers, his eyes burning with absolute, righteous fury. "You will never touch my daughter again."
Footsteps thundered down the hallway. Marcus Vance, flanked by six federal tactical agents in full body armor, swarmed into the room, their assault rifles raised.
"Drop your weapons! Federal agents! On the ground! Now!"
The remaining contractor dropped his gun and raised his hands. Judge Sterling collapsed against the wall, clutching his chest, weeping like a child.
Vanessa stopped struggling. She lay beneath Daniel, panting, her wet silk dress ruined, her hair plastered across her face.
She looked up at him and began to laugh. A low, jagged, hysterical laugh.

"You're too late, Daniel," she whispered, her lips pulling back into a blood-stained sneer. "Grant has already reached the north bunker. The upload sequence started twenty minutes ago. The trust fund is being transferred to a blind account in Zurich. By sunrise, you'll be broke, disgraced, and Claire’s legacy will belong to me."
