Chapter 52 - Blood in the Sky, Fire on the Sea

Two thousand feet above, the storm-wracked surface of the ocean was tearing itself apart under a bruised, lightning-scorched sky.

The titanium escape pod breached the violent waves with a concussive hiss, bobbing wildly against the four-story swells. Inside the cramped, red-lit interior, Julian fought against the heavy centrifugal force, his hands trembling as he unbuckled the harness strapping three-year-old Lily to the jump seat.

"Daddy..." Lily whimpered, her tiny face pale, her lips trembling uncontrollably. She clutched Daniel’s discarded dog tags tightly against her chest, her knuckles white. "Where is Daddy? He said he was coming..."

Julian swallowed the bitter bile rising in his throat. He looked at the girl's innocent, tear-stained eyes, remembering Daniel’s final words on the sinking hull: *Take care of my daughter. Teach her how to be human.*

"He’s fighting for us, Lily," Julian lied, his voice cracking beneath the weight of his own grief. "He told me to get you to safety. And that’s what we’re going to do. I swear to you."

He reached for the pod’s manual release handle and shoved the heavy hatch open.

A wall of freezing sea spray and sulfurous smoke battered his face. But as Julian poked his head out to survey the horizon, his blood turned to ice.

They weren't alone.

Circling three hundred yards out was an armada that had never officially existed on any naval registry. Three black, radar-absorbent stealth corvettes, their hulls devoid of national flags, were cutting through the towering waves in a tight pincer formation. Hovering above them through the torrential rain was a twin-rotor VTOL gunship, its forward 30mm rotary cannon whining as it swiveled, locking its thermal-imaging optic directly onto the pod.

"Target acquired," an amplified voice boomed from the gunship’s external loudspeakers, drowning out the roar of the hurricane. "Release the child asset immediately. Disobey, and you will be vaporized."

"Dammit!" Julian spat, diving back into the pod to grab an assault rifle strapped to the bulkhead rack. "They knew the launch coordinates before we even ejected!"

"Julian..." Lily whispered.

Julian turned around and froze.

The little girl was standing in the center of the pod. Her eyes were not looking at him, nor were they looking at the menacing gunship outside. She was staring straight down at the steel floor plates, her head tilted at an unnatural, listening angle.

Beneath her translucent skin, faint geometric patterns of silver were tracing along her collarbone, matching a frequency that human ears could not perceive.

"They can't hurt us, Julian," she whispered in an eerily calm, modulated tone that did not belong to a three-year-old child. "The leviathan is dead... but the King is coming."

Before Julian could process the horror of her words, the ocean twenty yards off the pod’s starboard side detonated.

It wasn't an artillery shell. It wasn't a depth charge.

A human silhouette exploded out of the churning sea, enveloped in a foaming geyser of water and crackling electricity. The figure hit the rear deck of the nearest stealth interceptor boat like a meteor, smashing clean through the armor-plated engine cowl.

The mercenaries on the deck barely had time to scream before hell broke loose.
