Chapter 25 - The Coldest Betrayal

Before Daniel could wrap his mind around the monstrous nightmare unfolding before him, the medical bay doors hissed open with hydraulic finality.

A squad of four heavy-security operatives stepped inside, their weapons trained on Daniel’s chest. But they didn't fire. They parted, creating a path.

Walking through the center of the squad was a man Daniel believed was rotting in the flooded depths of Tartarus.

Hayes.

He was soaking wet, wearing a naval survival suit, his face bruised and burned, but his eyes gleamed with triumphant malice. In his right hand, he held a remote detonation device wired directly to the submarine's internal life-support systems.

"You really are the hardest cockroach to kill on the planet, Daniel," Hayes said smoothly, wiping blood from his hairline with the back of his hand.

Daniel shielded Claire and Lily behind his body, his muscles tensing for an explosive charge. "You survived the breach."

"I am the architect of Tartarus, my dear friend," Hayes laughed quietly. "Do you think I build subterranean complexes without personal escape pods? The implosion was always part of the extraction. Tartarus had outlived its usefulness. The federal agencies were closing in, the Coast Guard was crawling all over Haven Point, and Victoria’s clumsy little stunt on the cliffs accelerated our timeline."

"Victoria is dead," Daniel said coldly.

"Good," Hayes replied without an ounce of remorse. "She was an expensive distraction. Her vanity made her sloppy. But this..." He gestured toward Lily’s sleeping form on the gurney. "This is immortality. Do you have any idea how much the global elite pay for a single vial of the stabilization serum derived from this child’s unique biological marrow? Trillions, Daniel. Wars will be fought for what sleeps inside that little girl’s veins."

"You sold my family out for money," Daniel spat, his voice trembling with sheer hatred.

"Money? Don't insult me," Hayes sneered. "Evelyn Vance doesn't deal in fiat paper. She deals in eternity. In seventy-two hours, when we arrive at the Svalbard Ice Trench, Dr. Vance will undergo the transference protocol into the child. The syndicate will control the next century of human evolution from the shadows."

"She's a three-year-old child!" Daniel roared, taking a step forward.

The mercenaries raised their rifles, clicking off their safety selectors in unison.

"Step back, Daniel," Hayes warned, his thumb resting casually on the remote switch. "One trigger pull, and the oxygen scrubbers in this medical bay dump neurotoxin. You, your defective clone bride, and your precious miracle daughter will choke on your own blood in under twenty seconds."

Claire weakly touched Daniel’s arm, begging him with her eyes not to move.

Hayes stepped closer, leaning down toward Lily. He reached out a gloved finger to touch her cheek. "Such a beautiful little key. She doesn't even know she holds the fate of humanity in her tiny hands."

Suddenly, Lily’s eyelids fluttered.

The heavy sedative was beginning to wane. Her dark brown eyes—eyes inherited from Daniel’s own mother—blinked against the harsh sterile lights. She looked around, confused, frightened, before her gaze landed on Daniel.

"Daddy...?" she whimpered, her tiny voice cutting through the mechanical hum of the submarine like a blade through silk. "Daddy, the water was cold... the bad lady pushed me..."

"Lily, look at me," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a gentle, commanding tone, hiding the volcanic rage tearing his soul apart. "Daddy’s right here, baby. Daddy’s got you."

Lily looked toward Hayes, her small brow furrowing in childish terror. Then, she pointed her small, trembling finger at Hayes’s pocket.

"Daddy..." Lily whispered, tears spilling down her cheeks. "The bad man has Mommy’s necklace. The one Mommy hid in the floor."

Hayes froze.

Daniel’s gaze dropped to Hayes’s utility pouch. Protruding from the zipper was the silver chain of the locket Daniel had given Claire on their wedding day—a locket that contained a micro-EMP trigger Claire had designed to fry the digital architecture of Evelyn’s synthetic transfer arrays.

Claire hadn't just hidden a code five years ago. She had built a weapon.
