Chapter 26 - The Child Who Unlocks the World

The silence in the medical bay became absolute.

Hayes realized his mistake a microsecond too late. He moved to shove the silver chain deeper into his pocket, but the split-second distraction was all the tactical opening Daniel needed.

Daniel moved with lethal, unhesitating brutality.

He didn't draw a gun; he lunged forward, grabbing Hayes’s extended arm, twisting the joint backward until the radius bone snapped with a sickening *crack*. Hayes shrieked in agony, dropping the remote detonator.

Daniel caught the detonator out of mid-air with his left hand and drove his right elbow straight into Hayes’s larynx, crushing his windpipe and sending the syndicate executive crashing against the biometric monitor in a heap of gasping, choking limbs.

"Fire!" the lead mercenary screamed.

Daniel kicked the heavy stainless steel pediatric supply cart over, flipping it into a barricade as automatic gunfire chewed through the medical bay. Vials of synthetic blood, saline bags, and glass syringes shattered in a violent hail of shrapnel.

"Claire, grab Lily!" Daniel shouted over the roar of the weapons.

Claire didn't hesitate. Adrenaline overriding the cellular rot eating her body from the inside, she ripped the monitoring sensors from Lily’s chest, scooped the three-year-old into her arms, and scrambled behind the reinforced pedestal of the surgical console.

Lily screamed, clinging to Claire’s neck with all her tiny strength. "Mommy! Mommy!"

"I'm here, baby! Mommy has you!" Claire choked out, covering the back of Lily’s head with her palm.

Daniel scooped up Hayes’s dropped sidearm—a customized armor-piercing caliber weapon. He leaned out from behind the metal cart, firing four controlled, devastating shots.

Two mercenaries dropped instantly, their armor pierced by the specialized rounds. The remaining two retreated into the corridor, setting up a crossfire choke point.

"We can't stay here!" Daniel yelled, sliding across the wet floor to Claire and Lily. "Hayes sounded the silent alarm. The entire crew is converging on this deck!"

Daniel grabbed Hayes by his collar, dragging the gasping man across the floor, pressing the muzzle of the pistol against the executive's shattered collarbone.

"The override code for the sub's communications mast," Daniel demanded, his voice dropping into an icy whisper that promised unthinkable violence. "Give it to me, or I will dismantle you piece by piece in front of these cameras."

Hayes gasped, spitting blood onto the white linoleum floor. "It doesn't... matter, Daniel... We are three hundred meters below the Atlantic... running beneath the polar ice pack... Even if you reach the surface... Dr. Vance controls the entire operational grid..."

"The code, Hayes!"

"Seven... nine... Omega... zero..." Hayes choked out, his eyes rolling back in terror.

Daniel didn't wait. He struck Hayes with the butt of the weapon, knocking him into unconsciousness, then snatched the wedding locket from the man’s pocket.

He popped the locket open. Inside was not a photograph, but a micro-miniaturized quantum drive, glowing with a soft, pulsing ultraviolet light.

"Claire," Daniel said, looking at her pale face. "What does this do?"

"It’s the failsafe," Claire whispered, her breath coming in ragged gasps. "Evelyn’s mind... she isn't just human anymore. Her consciousness has been digitized, mirrored on the submarine’s quantum core. If we plug this into the central mainframe in the secondary engine room, it triggers an acoustic purge. It will wipe every trace of the Genesis Protocol... but it will also kill the submarine’s propulsion and life support."

"Then we drown," Daniel said flatly.

"No," Claire said, tears filling her eyes as she looked down at Lily. "There is one escape craft left. The captain's deep-submergence exploration pod on Deck 1. But its launch system is biometrically locked to Dr. Vance's retinal scan. Only Evelyn can open it."

Daniel looked down at his daughter. Lily looked up at him, her huge brown eyes filled with an innocence that had no place in this subterranean slaughterhouse.

"Then I'm going to go have a word with the doctor," Daniel said coldly.
