Chapter 8 - The Corrupt Courtroom

Daniel tackled Grant from behind with the full force of his body, sending both of them crashing through the wooden balustrade and onto the circular floor of the lantern room. The thermos shattered against the iron floor, splashing scalding liquid across Grant’s neck.
Grant roared in pain, spinning around and throwing a vicious right hook that caught Daniel squarely on his fractured ribs.
Daniel gasped, the world spinning in white-hot agony as his legs gave out.
Grant scrambled to his feet, pulling a serrated combat knife from his belt. His eyes were wide, manic, illuminated by the flashing red light of the satellite dish outside the shattered glass windows.
"You should have stayed at the hospital, Mercer!" Grant snarled, slashing the knife in a vicious arc. Daniel leaned back, the blade slicing through his torn linen shirt, missing his chest by millimeters. "Vanessa’s already locked up! The feds have her! But this money isn't for Vanessa anymore. It’s mine! All I need is three more minutes, and Claire’s four hundred million disappears into seven untraceable crypto-wallets!"
"You killed Claire," Daniel breathed, circling Grant, his own knife held low in a defensive grip. "You helped Vanessa push her."
Grant laughed, a wet, ugly sound that rose above the howl of the wind outside. "Push her? Claire was smarter than you, Daniel! She figured out the Cayman shell accounts six months before you even suspected anything! She came up here to pull the backup hard drive. She fought like a wildcat. Broke my nose."
Grant tapped the scar across his cheekbone with the flat of his blade.
"Vanessa didn't push her," Grant sneered. "Vanessa held Claire down while I broke her neck. Then we threw her over the rocks. Just like we did with your little brat tonight."
The mention of Lily snapped the last thread of Daniel's restraint.
Daniel didn't dodge the next strike. He stepped directly into it.
Grant’s knife plunged deep into Daniel’s left shoulder. The pain was blinding, but Daniel used the impact to close the distance. He grabbed Grant’s wrist with his right hand, locking the blade in his own flesh, and drove his forehead with brutal, skull-shattering force straight into Grant’s nose.
Cartilage exploded. Grant shrieked, stumbling backward as blood sprayed from his face.
Daniel wrenched the knife from his shoulder and tackled Grant against the glass pane of the lantern room. The heavy industrial glass cracked with a sound like a gunshot.
"She was my wife," Daniel roared into Grant's bleeding face, his fingers wrapping around the man's windpipe. "And Lily is my daughter!"
"Ninety-nine percent!" the laptop speaker chirped cheerfully from the table. "Upload complete. Awaiting biometric confirmation."
Grant’s eyes rolled back as Daniel’s grip tightened, but he managed a choked, bloody grin. "It doesn't matter... Daniel. The private key... is locked. Without Lily's thumbprint... the trust self-destructs... and deletes everything. You'll have... nothing."
Daniel looked from Grant to the glowing blue screen.
The screen read:
**ENCRYPTION LOCK ACTIVE.**
**BIOMETRIC OVERRIDE DETECTED.**
**ENTER AUTHORIZED RECOVERY PHRASE.**
Daniel let go of Grant's throat. Grant collapsed to the iron floor, gasping and retching for air.
Daniel walked toward the laptop. His hands were shaking with blood, salt water, and exhaustion. He looked at Claire's silver star, still connected to the interface.
He remembered the night Claire gave him the star. They had been sitting on the very same rocks below this lighthouse, watching the sun sink into the Atlantic. Lily was barely six months old, sleeping peacefully in a sling against Daniel's chest.
*“If anything ever happens to me, Daniel,”* Claire had whispered, her fingers tracing the silver edges of the star, *“remember what I told you the night she was born. That’s where the truth lives.”*
Daniel placed his trembling fingers on the mechanical keyboard.
He didn't need Lily's fingerprint.
He typed the eight words Claire had whispered in the delivery room, words that no offshore lawyer, no forensic auditor, and no corporate hitman could ever possess:
**"MY STAR IN THE DARK, MY MORNING SUN."**
He pressed *ENTER*.
The screen flickered. The red warning banners vanished, replaced by a flood of brilliant green code.
**BIOMETRIC OVERRIDE ACCEPTED.**
**PRIMARY BENEFICIARY CONFIRMED: LILY MERCER.**
**SIREN HOLDINGS ACCOUNTS FROZEN BY ASSET PROTECTION PROTOCOL.**
**FORENSIC AUDIT DISPATCHED TO UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE.**
Behind him, Grant reached for his discarded knife, his face twisted in desperate, murderous rage. He lunged toward Daniel’s exposed back.
*BANG.*
The glass of the lantern room shattered inward. A single high-caliber sniper round tore through Grant’s chest, lifting him off his feet and slamming his lifeless body against the iron wall.
Grant slid to the floor, leaving a thick smear of dark blood against the white paint. He didn't move again.
Daniel turned slowly toward the shattered window.

Hovering fifty feet away in the pouring rain was a military Black Hawk helicopter, its side door open. Marcus Vance sat in the doorway, lowering a Barrett .50-caliber sniper rifle. He raised two fingers to his helmet in a crisp, silent salute.
